Unusual stations of St. Petersburg subway

May be you have already noticed while reading about the subway lines of St. Petersburg that some of the subway stations differ from others. It seems rational for me to notify about critical features of some stations, so your subway ride will be full of joy.

Check the map of the subway there, note the stations, if needed.

1 line of St. Petersburg subway

  • Lobby of station  “Площадь Ленина” (Ploshad’ Lenina), that is leading to Botkinskaya (Боткинская) street closed at 10pm, whereas another exit works till 12.28am.
  • Технологический институт (Tehnologicheskiy Institute)- the exit from the car is on the  on the right side when moving from one station to another, more information is here
  • Площадь Восстания (Ploshad’ Vosstaniya)– 3 exits to the city (one is through transit station “Маяковская“), more information is given in the article about the 1st subway line.

  • Ленинский Проспект: there are two exits from the station: one leads to Бульвар Новаторов, another one to Ленинский проспект, be attentive (one of the exits opens later and closes earlier, check the information in advance on the official website of the subway).
  • Проспект Ветеранов: there are two exits from the station: one leads to Проспект Ветеранов, another one to Дачный проспект,  be attentive (one of the exits opens later and closes earlier, check the information in advance on the official website of the subway).

2 line of St. Petersburg subway

  • Невский Проспект – there are three exits from the statinevsky-prospect2on (one is from the station Невский Проспект
the transition to Гостиный Двор (Gostiniy Dvor)
the transition to Гостиный Двор (Gostiniy Dvor)

to Михайловская street, after transition to Гостиный Двор – one exit leads to Невский проспект, 35, from the side of bug shopping mall Gostiniy Dvor, another exit goes to Griboedova Canal (канал Грибоедова). All the exits have different schedules of work, check the information about them in advance on the official website of the subway. The lobby that stands on the Griboedova Canal is closed for entrance during the work days from 7.30am to 10 am and from 4pm to 6.30 pm.

  • Технологический институт – see the information above.
  • Сенная Площадь=Садовая=Спасская, they all have the exits to Sennaya Square (Сенная площадь). All the exits have different schedules of work, check the information about them in advance on the official website of the subway.
  • Московская – there are two exits from the station: one leads to Altayskaya street and the airportMoskovskaya station, another one- to the Типанова street  (there are the pointers at the station).  The exit that  leads to the transport stop to the airport opens earlier and closes later than another, check the information about them in advance on the official website of the subway.

3 line of St. Petersburg subway

Anyway, when you are going to use  the subway, try to check the information in advance on the official website of the subway and also look throug the stations that are closed for repairs.

St. Petersburg. Basic info about the subway, lines, peculiarities

Description and peculiarities of subway and the underground stations of St Petersburg
  • It is the most northern subway in Russia. It’s most northern station is – M2Parnas (Парнас), the most western- M3Primorskaya (Приморская).
  • St. Petersburg has the deepest subway in the world. It’s average depth is 57 meters. M5Admiralteyskaya station is the deepest station in Russia with the emplacement depth of 102 meters.

M1 The first line of  St. Petersburg subway was launched in 1955. It  is also known as Red line, the name symbolically reflected the ideas of the Soviet era, the color choice was not accidental – it was the color of revolution.

Features: Originally there was only one underground line with eight stations in the style of Stalin’s empire. At the moment, due to the undeniable beauty these stations are officially listed in the state register of cultural heritage objects of regional significance.

M2Second or Blue line of Petersburg metro was launched in 1961. At that time there were no architectural frills: no decorative bas-reliefs and sculptures, the stations itself had short halls, there was tile instead of marble.

Features: for the first time in the USSR (it was in 1965), they made a system of automatic control of trains without the train drivers. Also for the first time in the history of world subways- the stations were built as “horizontal lifts” – that helped to reduce injuries in the subway, also it led to a quicker construction.

M3Third or Green line of St. Petersburg subway was opened in 1967.

Features: the line passes under the Nevsky Prospect, and has long spans (for instance, the distance between stations Elizarovskaya and Alexander Nevsky Square I is 4,7 km, that is the longest Russian underground span).

Advice: reckon  your time of travel considering the long distances between stations –  though there are few stations in a line, the ride from one station to another takes about 4-5 minutes.

M4Fourth or Orange Line. This is the first completely underground line St. Petersburg metro.

M5Fifth or purple line St. Petersburg metro. The line is the most modern among others  – new stations open practically annually.

General features of the stations:
  1. For the early subway stations of the 1st line there were built separate lobbies with domes (station Ploshad’ Vosstaniya, for instance, was built on the site of the temple which was specially destroyed for that matter, and now it is architecturally reminiscent of its predecessor – it has the rotunda with a spire).
  2. Petersburg’s subway has an interesting effect of the so-called “slides” used only in this city. The train goes from the station down the hill, which reduces power consumption, and at the exit to the station, it goes up due to compressed air.
  3. Petersburg subway has  unusual for the world engineering types of the stations  – “horizontal lifts”. “Horizontal lift” is a type of closed station, characterized by the closed doors in the side aisles, similar in planning to an ordinary elevator. When the train arrives to the station wagon doors coincide with doors along the platform and they automatically open along the entire side of a platform. That structure of stations prevented falling on the rails and led to building new stations more quickly, although the price for building and maintaining of the stations was even higher than for usual ones.

There were so many interesting stories and things about St. Petersburg’s subway, that a special “subway” museum was opened  in the fall of 2005, it was dedicated to a “beautiful underground city”- St. Petersburg. The museum  is located next to the station M3Приморская (if I am not mistaken, it is closed for reconstruction).

Additional information:
  • There are certain rules of behaviour for subway passengers, you can find them on the general page about subway. The most important rules to remember are the following: you can make photos without flash, you cannot eat and drink at the stations (you may get a fine for breaking the rules).
  • Disposition of some stations may be unexpected for the tourists, so I strongly recommend you to read the list of stations that differ from others.

Advice:

  • if it is possible, try to avoid using the subway at rush hours, from about 8 to 9 am and from 6 to 7 pm;
  • if using the subway plan your total  time of the ride adding 10-15 extra minutes (the reasons: you may not be able to enter the train at the first attempt or will stand in the tunnels for a while – a usual thing there).

If you want to find more information about the subway, lines, check out Wikipedia pages, http://metro.spb.ru (Russian only), http://metro.vpeterburge.ru/ (Russian only).

The car rent

The roads are not very smooth, the traffic police are very attentive to the cars which don’t follow the traffic rules. Traffic jams are very frequent in the city and  there is not a sufficient number of  places to park in the center (the car can be evacuated). Nevertheless, having the car gives you the freedom of moving around the city. You can find the list of the English-speaking companies below:

Advice

  •  If you can drive the car with an automatic transmission only, you would ask about the cars for rent in advance.
  • Pay attention to the road signs – there are many one-way streets and streets which have the special lines for the public transport.
  • Try to avoid the traffic jams in the city (they usually happen from 8.30 to 9.30 am, from 5.30 to 7 pm).

Taxi in St. Petersburg

If you are going to order the taxi by phone, the sequence is the following: you call the telephone number, you tell a point of departure and arrival, you ask about the price or the operator says that, if you agree, the order is made.  Some taxi services accept credit/debit cards for peyment, ask the operator about that option if you need it. The cost of a trip is fixed, you can leave a tip as a change from the .

The taxi will arrive by the arranged time, when it comes to the place the taxi service will send the message to your specified phone number or the driver will call you to name the car number and the color of it. Not all the taxis have an identification mark of a taxi. Nevertheless, if all the information on a car number and a name of the driver coincides with the information specified to you, that is your car, you can go.

Unfortunately, not all the companies have English-speaking operators and the English website; I have made a small list an English-speaking companies where you can order a taxi online:
Angel Taxi, (+7) 812 777 20 10,
Taxi 068,  (+7) 812 068, (+7) 812 324 77 77,
New Yellow Taxi,  (+7) 812 600 88 88,
Taxity,
Taxi 6000000
TAXI 777

Advice – do not use the services of the private cars – at a minimum you can overpay for the ride, at maximum it may be dangerous.

The water transport

There is the water transport in the city which is called aquabus. This transport allows passing the traffic jams of the city. It is also good for looking at the city from the water. Right now there is only one route in the city.
The stops are as follows:

  1. Bronze horseman;
  2. Summer Garden;
  3. The Finland Embankment;
  4. The Petrogradskaya Embankment;
  5. The Aptekarskaya Embankment;
  6. the subway «Черная речка» = “Chernaya rechka”;
  7. the last stop is the subway «Старая деревня» = “Staraya derevnya”.

The price and extra information are mentioned on the website. The price of a child’s ticket is reduced.

The time schedule:
The weekdays, the weekends and holidays – the time of wait is about 20 min, no more than 60 minutes.

Here is the scheme of the route.

akvabus

The ways to pay for the subway ride

            It is possible to ride the subway in two ways: using the tokens or putting a contactless smart card to a turnstile. The tokens are good for infrequent travel in the subway, and also for night travel (according to the schedule of the subway).
It is possible to buy a token at the subway ticket window, but the most convenient option is to use the special machine gun which issues the required number of tokens and the change for the banknote of 100 rubles. The ticket for a multi ride is coded on a smart card “Podorozhnik” (“Подорожник”). A smart card is of blue or violet color which can be purchased in the ticket booth or in the multifunctional device.
If you plan to use a smart card, be aware that in addition to the cost of the ticket itself you will need to pay a deposit (55 rubles) for the card, which can be returned to the cashier (you will be refunded the deposit there). In St. Petersburg, the metro ticket offices do not issue a receipt or document confirming the payment of travel; if you need to confirm travel expenses, ask the cashier to write a check. If the tourist plans to use the subway frequently, I would recommend the cards with a limit on them of  10, 20, 25, 40 or 50 rides.
Attention – there is a limit of the next time passage for the cards. It is specified in the table (the information is taken from the official website of the subway).

# Ticket name  Cost Number of rides Timeout existence*  Note
 1 Token subway-token  31 rub 1 no
2 Baggage payment. If you have the luggage, you need to buy a special white baggage token. With that token you can pass the special  turnstile near the cabin controllers. Simply say on cash desk ” Oplata Bagazha” (“Оплата багажа”= “payment for the luggage”). luggage-payment  31 rub - no token

Money for unused trips is not refundable, but you can return the card to the cash desk and get the collateral value.

There are the discounts for the trips in the underground in a calendar month (based on the rate per trip) – information is actual for June 2014 (the information is also taken from the official website of the subway)

The types of the tickets (here you can find the basic information, you can read the detailed information on the official subway website http://www.metro.spb.ru/ticket.html)

The most commonly used cards are the following:

  1. The contactless card МЕТРО is intended for the multi rides. It doesn’t have the functions of the electronic ticket, it can have the exact purchased amount of rides. It can be used after the refilling of the rides and next time it can be paid for is after the end of the purchased time.  regular-pass
  2. The contactless smart card “Подорожник. It is intended to be used as an electronic purse – it can have the money on it be which you can pay for the ride. Also it is possible to buy the multi ride tickets on it.podorozhnik
  3. The contactless smart card “Card of the guest”. You can use it as an electronic purse.petersburg-card

If you ride in public transport with baggage you need to pay for it separately.

Refilling the travel card

The maximum sum to refill the card is 15000 rubles. The minimum is the fare of the ride in public transport (for the year 2014 it is 25 rubles for trams, buses and trolleybuses).

The basic information

If you have the smart card you should put it in the special card receiver of the multipurpose machine. On the screen there will be information about the balance of your account and different options, you can choose English language for the operations. The machine accepts coins (1, 2, 5 rubles) and the banknotes (the banknotes should have the rating mentioned on the screen, otherwise the banknotes will be given back by the machine).

devices

The step-by-step instruction:

1. Insert the card into the receiving slot, labeled as “Insert the card.” The screen will display the current status of the ticket on your card.

2. Click “Pay”. Display shows a list of  tickets types you can buy. If the valid travel ticket card is already written on the card and not used till the end, it does not allow the replenishment of trips. There will be a message on the screen “The payment of this card is impossible”

3. Choose the ticket you want to purchase from the list of options by clicking on it at the left. If you choose the type of ticket with an arbitrary number of  trips and validity of 90 days, set the resource for ticket corresponding buttons on the screen. The same procedure goes for refilling the card with the money for the electronic card.

4. Click “Pay”. The screen will display the chosen value of the ticket and the maximum value of the banknotes.

5. Enter the banknotes or coins into the respective receiver in the amount of the cost of the selected ticket (note – if you are refilling the electronic card and you want to refill it with more than one banknote,  put it into receiver one after another and when you are done, click the option “”to pay). The screen will display the resource of a purchased ticket and the message on completion of record of the ticket on the card.

6. Take delivery of the bowl return and the card with a recorded ticket.

Advice – insert money into the money machine without long delays, otherwise the machine will be locked and the screen will display “The automat is  locked, wait for the arrival of the cashier.” In this case, refer to the cashier station.

Advice – Do not remove the card inserted into the machine until the completion of the ticket recording. The cancel of purchase the ticket is only possible before inserting the money and is made by pressing the “Cancel” button  on the screen machine or removing the card from the machine.

 Automatic token-selling machine

You can get the tokens in automatic machines which are situated in the lobbies of the Petersburg subway; also you can use the multi functional device for this purpose.

Advice– perhaps, the subway can be the only public transport where it is possible to exchange the banknote of a big value (only if you come not late at night and not early in morning).

If you do consider the information on the website to be  useful/money saving / time saving, you can send some king of financial support/gratitude by clicking the button below.

The commercial transport

Commercial transport vs public transport
Advice

The difference between the public transport and the commercial transport:

  • the appearance –  commercial buses which look in the same way as the regular ones have the “K” letter in front of the number and the minibuses are always the commercial buses;
  • the differences in stops – the public transport stops only at the stops of public transport, the commercial transport – anywhere on the route upon the request (the polite form of request is «остановите, пожалуйста» you can see it on the section «No language barrier»);
  • the speed of driving is faster,
  • the fare is more expensive (35 rubles and more if you are going to the suburbs).
  • The fare is paid directly to the driver. 2 people who sit behind the driver usually pass the money (the cash and the change) to the driver.

The advice-

  •  If you use the commercial transport, say or show the address in advance – the commercial buses can miss the stops, so you will be misleaded when to get out.
  • If you are standing not at the 1st stop of the transport you should hitch-hike it.
  • The buses with the same number but the absence or presence of the “K” letter have different routes, be attentive!

Subway

Here you can find:

General information

The subway hub consists of 5 lines. Most of the stations work from 5:45 until the midnight (you can check the schedule here). The Petersburg subway is the second-large underground transport system in Russia. The subway, especially in rush hours, is the fastest mean of transport and has the biggest passenger capacity in comparison to other means of transport . Its departures are more regular. In addition to being a good mean of transport the underground has an aesthetic effect – one of the subway lines can be called the line of underground palaces.

You can see the map of the subway below (it was taken from the map of www.citytourpass.ru).

subway-map

In the 2014 the fare for the ride is 28 rubles. You can see the variety of cards here (! if you are not using the google translator for this page, you will need to click on google translation and after that to click on the link).

The waiting time for trains in the subway depends on the part of the week (workdays, weekends or holidays). On the average, the time of wait during the rush hours of work days is about 3-4 minutes, and on the days off and in the evenings are about 8-12 minutes.

The entrance to the subway is always marked by a letter “M” (the same letter is on the tokens).

In the subway there are information stands: maps of the city, electronic information points.

The main rules of behavior in the subway are the following:

  1. You may be asked to show the documents and the baggage. If  you refuse inspection, you will have to leave the subway. You have the right to take a child under 7 years free of charge, and  to photograph without flash.
  2. On the elevator, you should stand on the right side (as people are passing by the passengers going down), hold the handrails and the baggage. On the platform you should leave space for an exit of passengers from cars. In the cars you should give way to disabled people, elderly people, pregnant women and passengers with children.
  3. It is forbidden to be barefoot at the stations (!), to drink alcoholic drinks in the subway, to eat food, to run on a platform, not to follow the traffic rules (usually there is right-hand movement, in some places there are restrictions on an entrance the underpass).

Advice – As you have already read above, you should stand on the right side of the elevator. The same rule works for going upwards on the escalators.

If you are interested in detailed information about the rules of behavior in the subway, specific schedule of work of stations, information desks, the streets which are in the route of night buses, the “commuter intercepting  parking” (these are the stations which have a paid parking lot nearby. Leaving a car here, you can avoid traffic jams of land transport in rush hours by continuing underground route), movement of handicapped groups, the list of stations with automatic machines for sale and replenishment of travel cards, check a subway site (! unfortunately, it is only in Russian, so, please, click on the google translator on the top of this page and click after that on the link).

*The station  M2Невский проспект” = “Nevsky Prospect” has a second exit.

Attention:  some of the stations are very specific:

 M3 “Василеостровская”=”Vasileostrovskaya” – the first 2 doors of the train (counting from the 1st car) don’t open, the exit from the 1st car is possible through the 3rd and 4th door.

The subway station M1 “Технологический институт”= “Tekhnologicheskiy institute” combines 2 trains of different lines. When moving from station M1 «Пушкинская»   to M2  «Фрунзенская»  (and vica versa), you should cross the platform to the train, if you are going from M2 «Сенная»  до M1 «Балтийская»  (and vice versa),   you have the same situation. If you need other stations, you will need to climb the stairs of the underpass.

The subway stations  M1 “Технологический институт 1″ = “Tekhnologicheskiy institute 1“,  M1 “Пушкинская”= “Pushkinskaya”, M1 “Владимирская” = “Vladimirskaya” – the last door of the last car doesn’t open.

The exit from the car to the platform is usually made from the left side of the train. These are the exceptions: “Технологический институт” = “Tekhnologicheskiy institute“, M1 “Девяткино” = “Devyatkino”, M2 “Купчино”= “Kupchino”,  M2 “Парнас” = “Parnas”, M5 “Спортивная” = “Sportivnaya”. At the stop you may be surprised that you are standing backward to the opened doors. The information about exit is announced in advance but it is in Russian language only.

 Attention: here is the list of the most crowded stations during the rush hours (from 8 to 9.30 am, from 5 to 7 pm):

M3 Василеостровская, M1 Проспект Ветеранов, M1 Ленинский проспект, M1 Автово, M1 Балтийская, Пионерская, M2 Проспект Просвещения,  M1 Чернышевская, M1 Площадь Восстания .

Attention: it may be overcrowded on Sundays after 4pm near the subway station  M5 “Спортивная” = “Sportivnaya” as the football games are held nearby. If the subway is not working people need to go to other stations or use land transport. The subway station  «Проспект Большевиков» hosts the hockey games. In comparison with «Спортивная» station, it is not closed after the game so it is overcrowded by the fans of the game.

The note – the deepest stations of St. Petersburg are the following: M5“Адмиралтейская”,M1 “Чернышевская”,M1 “Площадь Ленина”. The way from the lobby to the train can take about 3-5 minutes if there is no crowd in the subway. The average time of ride between the stations is not 1-1.5 minute as in other cities of the world but about 2,5-4 minutes. If you are planning to be somewhere at the exact time you should leave about 10 minutes to be on time.
